A complex, interesting coffee with lots of tangy, fruity and sweet flavour notes, and a lingering vanilla aftertaste.

For those not familiar with Peaberries, they're a naturally occurring variant caused by a variation in rainfall and heat, in which a coffee cherry has just one oval or round bean instead of the usual pair of beans (seeds). They're more round in shape than a standard coffee bean, hence their "Peaberry" label.

Peaberries can offer concentrated flavours and interesting complexity, although whether the fact that they're peaberries is truly responsible for their superior flavour is a matter of opinion.

The simple fact is, though, these beans taste great!

How it Tastes

When I first tasted this coffee, other than the obvious complexity and tanginess, I found it quite difficult to pin down the most prominent comparative flavour which I like to do when naming coffees, as you'll have noticed.

After a bit more tasting (yup, a tough job, but someone has to do it, hehe) I decided that the most obvious taste comparison is Rhubarb crumble and custard.

There's a really interesting, lingering tangy acidity that reminds me of rhubarb, and a smooth and sweet note which also lingers, and leaves me with a subtle vanilla aftertaste.

Rumukia Farmers Co-operative

This coffee is produced mainly by smallholder farmers in Nyeri County, adjacent to Mount Kenya, processed by the Ndia-ini wet mill, managed by the Rumukia Farmers Co-operative Society.

The farms are mainly family-run and are about half an acre on average, each with around 250 coffee trees.
