Origin: Nicaragua

Certifications: SHG. Rainforest Alliance. Direct Trade. Cup of Excellence

SCA Score: 86

Roast: Light

Suitable for:
Pour over
Inverted aeropress
Espresso (challenging, not ideal for entry level setups, integrated grinders & fixed temp machines)

Varietal: Yellow Catuai, Red Catuai, Caturra.

Process: Washed

Various fruity notes & an increased toffee and caramel sweetness as it cools. Lingering aftertaste of vanilla and caramel reminiscent of custard creams!

This a stonking, high-scoring & cup of excellence awarded single origin coffee grown in the fertile volcanic soil of the La Bastilla Estate, in the lush tropical paradise of the Cerro Datanli El Diablo Nature Reserve in Jinotega, northern-central Nicaragua.

The Speciality Coffee Association score of this coffee bean is 86, and it is also a Cup of Excellence winning coffee. It's Rainforest Alliance certified, and it's a direct trade coffee which means it's purchased directly from the farmer.

Please note, this is a bean we'd recommend for pour over and inverted aeropress.

It's not recommended for cafetiere, or for espresso for standard espresso setups. If you're accustomed to pulling shots of espresso with lighter roasts, however, then this coffee can be very enjoyable as espresso when well extracted. Please note, this is a dense bean, it's not suited to bean to cup machines or integrated grinder portafilter machines.

How it Tastes

This is a very high quality coffee, with a broad range of both interesting and satisfying flavour notes, the most discernible of which for me is custard creams.

It's important to note if you're new to coffee tasting, that when we're talking about taste notes, we're talking about fairly subtle flavours, and it's very subjective.

Don't worry too much if you don't agree with my particular taste descriptors, it's very common for people to not concur exactly with taste notes on coffee, as taste is a subjective thing.

The important thing is, do you enjoy it? If so, great, put it on subscription to make sure you don’t run out, and save 15% too :-). If not, each to their own, we have lots of other lovely coffees for you to try.

La Bastilla Farm

La Bastilla coffee farm is located around 20 kilometers from Jinotega, in the stunning tropical paradise of the Cerro Datanli El Diablo Nature Reserve, an extremely important biodiverse protected habitat.

The farm is situated in a unique microclimate, with an abundance of natural shade-providing trees, volcanic soil and a natural biodiversity which results in exceptional quality coffee with distinctive qualities.

La Bastilla became Rainforest Alliance certified in 2003 and maintains an ongoing program for continuous improvement.

One for the Aeropress

For some reason i just can't seem to get this singing out of any of my drippers. It's a nice brew, but nothing to shout about, unlike the two Kenyan light roast Kev offers (which are exceptional).

But i just got an Aeropress and brewed it up in that and that made a world of difference. A much nicer coffee with more of that tanginess coming through that i enjoy. I just put the last 17g through the Aeropress and sitting here enjoying a nice lingering yummy after taste.

I used the recipe from the youtube video... The Winning AeroPress Recipe of 2021 ** NEW **

I'm thinking it likes having a bit more of the body (cloudiness) that the Aeropress leaves in which gets lost in the clarity the drippers give it. Although it may also be down to using a ZP6 to grind it with giving it even more clarity from the drippers, and being a relative newbie who is still learning to dial things in properly.

But definitely a coffee i'll buy again in the future as i'm determined to get the drippers up to the Aeropress level with this coffee - it's a fun challenge for a learning newbie. The Aeropress has leg me know there's a much nicer outcome in this coffee, it's just learning to release it from my drippers.

And now i have a bag of "Cranberry and Pomegranate Kenyan" (which i totally adored last time) to get through and i also need to go and place another order for some more Coffeeworks coffees.

Thanks Kev.

Very pleasant and flavoursome beans

Not too tricky to dial in - decent albeit slightly under extracted espresso on first try and with a slight adjustment to a finer grind it produced a perfect espresso - flavour profile of custard cream is a good description- not acidic or exactly fruit forward - but a nice complex balance of vanilla and cream flavours - goes down very easily

Thank you for your review SJ. We really do appreciate it :-)

Custard Cream

These beans make sweet espresso - really nice. My favourites so far. I intend to try all of CWorks beans.

Lovely light roasted coffee

Tricky to dial in correctly. But once done, the flavours come "alive." The coffee looks great, and unusually light creamy colour with milk. If you drink with milk, don't use much and it's worth trying without as it's mild enough to taste. In fact if you can't drink coffee without milk, it's a good one to fully appreciate the taste and start drinking it black.

Thank you for your fantastic review Michael :-)
