About Our Nicaraguan Coffees

Nicaragua might not be the most obvious coffee origin, like Colombia, Brazil, or Ethiopia, but it's an incredible origin with some stunning coffees. And La Bastilla Estate, where these two single origins come from, is genuinely something special.

Toffee Apple Nicaragua is a comfort coffee. It’s got the classic balance: apple acidity, sweet caramel, a bit of chocolate, and a nut in the background. It works beautifully in espresso, cafetière, and filter.

Custard Cream Nicaragua is the fancier, lighter-roasted, Cup of Excellence–awarded sibling. If you're into light roasts via pour-over or inverted AeroPress, you might just love this one! If you're a light roast espresso lover, you might also fall in love with it, provided you have the gear and the skills, as it can be a bit of a challenge.

We also have Toffee & Caramel Half Caffeine, which isn't a single-origin Nicaraguan but a blend of Custard Cream Nicaragua and Milk Chocolate and caramel Honduras, a Swiss water-processed decaf. It's perfect for anyone who wants coffee with all the character but less bouncing off the walls.

I’m constantly sampling more Nicaraguans, but only the ones that hit the sweet spot on flavour, ethics, and value make it into the range. So keep your eyes peeled!

Nicaraguan Coffee FAQs

Q: What does Nicaraguan coffee taste like?

A: It really depends on the specific Nicaraguan coffee in question, but it’s usually smooth and sweet, with flavour notes along the lines of caramel, chocolate, and nuts. There’s often a gentle fruit acidity, rather than funky or tangy sharpness.<h3>

Q: Which roast should I go for?

A: This really depends on what you're looking for. Toffee Apple Nicaragua is a medium roast, very versatile, and more forgiving for espresso than its lighter-roasted sibling. Custard Cream is a lighter roast, incredible when well dialled in, with more delicate and complex flavour notes.

Q: Are these good for all brew methods?

A: Yeah, although Custard Cream is ideal for pour over and inverted Aeropress. Toffee Apple and Half Caff are more forgiving and work great in cafetiere, filter, espresso and more.

Q: Are Nicaraguan coffees ethical and sustainable?

A: La Bastilla Estate, where both of our Nicaraguan single origin coffees are grown, is Rainforest Alliance certified and deeply involved in biodiversity preservation.
